Shoreline Update - Photos from the Water

Here are some shots to give you an idea what the completed new shoreline looks like.

Love the granite steps. Perfect for people like us with docks

:D , also great to sit on, or dangle you feet in the water. This year the bottom steps are below water due to the high water levels.

Shrubs were added this spring to help with erosion, and perhaps to concentrate traffic down to the single water entry point.

Personally I was a bit disappointed with the large river rock stones used to either side of the granite steps. They do not look natural to this area and stand out like a sore thumb, at least from the water...

I have photos for all shoreline project sites (76-105) which I'll add to the Campsite Guide

happening with this section which is 'caged' off. Might be some sort of shrubs which are now drowning in the high water...

Hi Dave,
Are they doing this shoreline update all around FCP? Love the step idea, but I agree the rocks look fake. Also, the gate thing concerns me - seems like its blocking access to the ponds?
Thanks

ish to 105, to replace the old deteriorated cement barrier.

The fences are temporary. I believe for just this year to allow the newly planted vegetation a chance to take hold.

Yes you were right! What kind of trees do you think they are Matt? I did't look close enough. I certainly prefer trees that would help with erosion, but still provide us with the views :D

Hopefully they we some time soon have a budget to add some log barriers (and back fill) or at least do something to the sites that are getting heavily eroded. Many expense fireplaces will be lost in the next year or so unless something is done to stabilize some of the shorelines. I would think it would be cheaper to fix the erosion than replace a fireplace.

Here are a few shots from this year of some fireplaces that will be hanging on shortly...

A gather the odd camper has tried to help the situation, which I am sure would be quite effective at
slowing/stopping the erosion, and saving fireplaces (and valuable land for all the big rigs these days.

. Sure looks to me that those boards have helped a lot!

Wouldn't take that much work to create some barriers out of logs on many sites around the ponds where

they have large eroded areas of sand that extend back into the site, then back fill to reclaim some land.
Sites such as 186 and 187...

Would the state allow volunteer groups to do this?

funny you should notice that. We usually stay in the Site 57

for a long time had a log buried at the shoreline which created a small pennisula as compared to the sited on either side. A couple years ago someone pulled out that logm now the shoreline is catching up with the rest. What they should do with some of the cutdowns they do in the spring is simply lay them on the shoreline. Just doing that would help a lot and is cheap to do.

The boards in the photo above as well as using logs to hold back the shore certainly doesn't look unnatural, and has less visual impact on the 'natural shore' then having to redo the shoreline as per 76-105. There are a few others like 252 that show just how effective some simple boards or logs can be for sites that are up a few feet or more off the water.

I retook photos (1,400 in all) of Site 200

-305 during memorial week since the current ones are getting old (took most 5 years ago). A good exercise to for monitoring the erosion of each sites shoreline and keeping tabs on the fireplaces (many campers are interested in the shape of the fireplaces and whether or not they have usable grills).

I hope to do a bunch more sites (maybe the rest if I am lucky and fit lol) when

we are there next week and near the end of June when we are in Lake Placid for a week.
