Using vegetable oil as fuel for campfire

Hello wonderful families of FCP forum,

I have a totally random, and for some of you what

for you.

So I have this bottle of Corn Oil in my home kitchen that I have been hesitantly using, somebody gave it to me, and I'm thinking of non-waste

fully disposing/using it for the purpose other than bodily consumption because of GMO concerns and all kinds of things I hear about the bad chemical reactions that take place when

the oil is heated to a high temperature. Now, some of you may disagree with what I'm doing and that's OK, but I've already made up my mind that I'm getting rid of this corn oil (I'm getting EVOO or EVCO instead) -- and I would like to hear your expert opinion here from henceforth. :P

So I thought of disposing the corn oil but it seems wasteful to toss it in the garbage

. And I was wondering

if I can save this bottle for our camping trip next year and use it as a fuel for campfire. I'm wondering if any veteran campers out here ever used cooking oil as fuel and how well it works especially in comparison with the regular camping fuel?

Even just an assurance that the oil is going

Thanks so much! xx

We've used oil left from frying turkeys to "accelerate" our campfires and it worked great. Helps get damp wood

I wouldn't use it to fuel a Coleman stove or anything, but to help get your campfire going

Agree! I have an old jug of peanut oil that is no good for cooking any more. But it makes a nice fire starter. Pour it over some small pieces of wood

We use cooking oil in the oil based hurricane lamps we have. We don't concern ourselve on type as long as it is cheap so corn oil should work fine. The lamps are cheap and shed a decent amount of light (pay attention to the reflector). If you set the wicks right there is little or no smoke and a fill will last a long time. We use 3 of them and the oil fuel is a lot less volitol than the Coleman white gas. As with any flame light be careful where

you place or hang it so it will not tip over of ignite a tree. We have an old railroad lamp that even works nicely as a spotlight.

By the way a really food fire starter is drier lint. If dry a spark from spent lighter will ignite it.
