I hope this is not too awkward for this forum, but I wanted to share this story because I thought some of you may appreciate or at least understand
why Fish Creek is such a special place. If you saw my recent post about driving time, I mentioned my father passed away last year. And also that he brought my sister and I up on Fish Creek, much the way he had been as a child himself. So Fish Creek has always been special to us and my whole extended family. There will be something like 25 or 30 of us camping there next week!
My dad had moved to NC about 10 years ago, and my wife and I had recently relocated here ourselves. We all had reservations to be up at Fish Creek in July, along with my sister, my Dad's fiance, and that big extended family from NY.
when Dad died Memorial Day weekend last year, many of his friends and relatives in NY could not make the trip down. We knew we had to do a separate memorial service and we couldn't have picked a better way to honor him than to do it at Fish Creek.
In addition to those of us who were planning to camp anyway, a number of others were able to drive in for the day or even spend a night camping with us. We held an informal service at the amphitheater
where we shared some memories, and then went back to one of the campsites for food.
Later in the week a smaller group of us scattered his ashes and took a ride over to
Chapel Island , which was a place Dad always liked to go when he had the chance. Everything was just as perfect as I ever could have hoped for.
With our trip just a few days away, I'm looking forward to being up there again, now for some new reasons.
Thank you for reading, and allowing me to put this out there. I hope I have shown in another small way the impact of this beloved campground.
