Discussion about camping gear you recommend or have questions about, or camping techniques that have worked well for you. Maybe even gear that is well suited to the Fish Creek experience.

Peak Finder

Hi Everyone,

I just found a cool little gadget that was written up in our Rochester Democrat & Chronicle newspaper. It is called Thatcher's Peak Find

er. It basically tells you what

you are looking at at the top of the mountains. It has Arab, St. Regis, Ampersand, Haystack, Whiteface and more. We thought it was awesome b/c we are constantly trying to figure out

what is what up on the peaks. It is small, lightweight and best of all, waterproof!

I got it at the Eastern Mountian Sports at Pittsford Plaza -- IDK if they have them at other EMS's.

Here's a link to their website.

We are looking forward to using that this year.

Nice! Is it only the 46ers or are smaller peaks included?

Can you use it to name on the peaks visible from Square Pond? I did a bit of research a while back and ended up using Google Earth mainly to figure out

all the neighbouring peaks visible from Square Pond and out on Upper Saranac

Right now he only has the one Peak Find

to do more of these with other peaks. There are 10 in this one. They are ...

1. Ampersand
2. Azure
3. Baker
4. Cascade
5. Haystack
6. Jenkins
7. Arab
8. Owls Head
9. St. Regis
10. Whiteface

Some high peaks...some not. Interestingly, there are a lot of them from right around Fish Creek :)

We'll take it to the top of Whiteface to help identify what we see from there. I haven't looked at it thoroughly enough to know if there is anything we'll be able to identify from Square Pond.

Might want to try the 'free' version. Its up on the wall at the 'Cottage' restaurant in Lake Placid on Mirror Lake (belongs to the Mirror Lake Inn). Good excuse to go for a few beer. Awesome views of the hike peak from the Cottage, and you don't have to work up a sweat! The map

upp on the wall tells you which peak is which.

Yeah ... I should have been more clear about Whiteface. Definitely NOT climbing it. Driving is much preferred.

Beer is always welcome, however :) lol

You could always ride the Gondola up as well. Easier on the car especially in the heat!
