Places to Eat

We love our campsite-cooked meals, but we do enjoy venturing out to eat in local establishments also. I really enjoy find

Anyways, where

with this... We've stopped at a couple places we liked within driving range while staying at Fish Creek. These were recommended by locals, but I'm sure there are dozens more that I don't know about. I'd like to stop at a couple each time we're up. So, here's mine - what

Swiss Kitchen - on Main St in Tuper Lake - great little diner with excellent breakfast and lunches - reasonable prices. Nice "old-time main street" atmosphere. :baconandeggs:

Red Fox Inn - on Rt 30 just before Saranac - nice bar - very casual atmosphere - entrés generally $14 - $23 range. Good food and good people.

We have been to both and we agree. For a veeeeery special night out we love the Lodge at Lake Clear. The food and atmosphere is wonderful. They also have the best wine and beer selection outside of Placid. Not cheap, but not outrageous either.

The Lumberjack Restaurant on Route 3 at the west end of the village of Tupper Lake (right by the new railroad station) is rumored to be the best breakfast around. We headed there with Bryan and Amber last year to give it a try. When

we got there, it was closed for a death in the family.

But the place right across the street was open, and their breakfast mighty good! Neither of us can remember the name of the place. Maybe Brian or Amber will chime in.

We try to stop at the Great Adirondack Steak and Seafood on the main drag in Lake Placid at least once every year. They carry all the Saranac microbrewery products and have some of the best meals anywhere in the Adirondacks.

Everybody raves about the Tail 'o the Pup in Raybrook for barbecue.

I'm still looking for a decent burger joint up there.

We stopped at the Park Restaurant last year and had a great meal. Its right on the Main drag next to Shaheen's Motel. It was a week nite so it was not to busy, service was excellent and the prices were reasonable. We will definitely go back next year.

Its been a while since I have been there but yes the Lumberjack use to be the place to go for breakfast.

We try to stop at the Great Adirondack Steak and Seafood on the main drag in Lake Placid at least once every year.

We stopped at the Belvedere Restaurant in Saranac lake last year and were nicely surprised. Go into town via the road by the medical center. Take a left on Bloomingdale rd (where

the Stewarts and the train station are) and it will be down there on the right. You can always stop at Crystal Springs (Donnelly's) on the way back. Also the Wilderness Inn on the way to Whiteface (pass Placid) is always good and just past that is the original A&W, plus that swimming hole you see on the "I love NY" Commercials. Jump off the rocks then go in for a steak.

There are four Places Amber and I have to eat during our week long trip to Fish Creek every year. I know four sounds like we're not camping enough, but if you just reserve

For breakfast, I've been going

to the lumberjack for as long as I can remember. Like Steve and Gail said we tried to go last year with them but they were closed. Maybe we can try with them again this year and anyone else that is interested during the tear-up. But go there hungry. The portions are large :baconandeggs:

Ambers Favorite while we are up there is the Mexican restaurant right in Saranac. The Casa Del Sol is the name. You can't miss it. It's a big yellow building. A Mexican restaurant in Saranac kinda stands out. We met the nicest couple in there a last Winter during the carnival. The older gentleman that everyone in the place called sal, and made sure to say hello to, gave Amber a piece of his sharks meat right of his fork. :o

Another place we always hit is the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery. It's Located

near the beach on Mirror Lake. I have to stop in there and get my baby back ribs. They're so good!!! I don't normally drink beer but I do when

I'm there just to take in the whole micro-brewery experience.

And finally the trip wouldn't be complete anymore without stopping into the Tail O' The Pup, Located between Saranac and Placid. I can almost smell

the pulled pork now. I've been visiting that area of the Adirondacks my entire life (31 years) and it wasn't till this past year that I stopped in. OMG! What

an amazing and fun environmental. And to think, Amber had to talk me into it. Now I have trouble passing it without stopping in.

Well that’s my spots to eat. Below are a few links I found for them.

Pub and Brewery... the only place I have even been where you can order a rum and coke and they ask, "small, medium or large"... mind you, you'll probably want to order an UBU !

I agree with Steve... Steak and Seafood. Great samplers (same for the Pub and Brewery!). They actually have an item on the menu that has something to do with Fish Creek... think I posted a photo of the menu item on here somewhere

.

Now about Tail O' Pup... that place is a love it or hate it kind of place. If you search on Google you'll find

out more about that, lots of people who

hate it, many who love it. Stop in if you haven't already and decide for yourself! Our friend ordered the blackened chicken and it was... well pretty bad. She had to send it back and another came out just as bad. The atmosphere is great mind you! Great entertainment outside, just love it. I have no problem stopping in for some fries and beer of course. but thats about it!

The 'Cottage' on Mirror Lake is always on our hit list. We never miss going

at least once when

we are in Lake Placid. Simple yet great food, excellent atmosphere and best view of the High Peaks to boot. We even kayaked

up to the Cottage for lunch once last summer. If the Moose Lodge is open, better stop in there too for lunch. Prime prime spot right on Lake Placid, best view of Whiteface Mtn hands down.

We did love to stop in at Morgans 11 for wood

fired pizza in Saranc Lake, but unfortunately it is closed now... not sure if it will reopen.

Back to Lake Placid, if you want a special lunch, be sure to stop in at the Lake Placid Lodge for something unforgetable, along with the excellent views of Whiteface. On the pricier side, but worth it. Great place to take your favorite 'special' camper

We agree with all the postings so far

(we do not go into Placid as we like to stay "local") so here a few more. The Diner at the airport serves a great breakfast and they even bake their own bread. For a very special dinner we love going

to the Lodge at Lake Clear. The menu is old world German and the dining room is absolutely beautiful. The wine and beer lists are very extensive. This is not the place to go to if you are in a hurry, but very worth it. Last summer we discovered the newly opened Left Bank Cafe in Saranac lake. Great lunch menu (no dinner) of coffees, fresh pastries and crepes. The owner/chef spent 20 minutes showing our two girls how crepes are made (there is an open kitchen). Charlie's Inn near the Lodge has ok standard fare. The beer is ice cold

and the service is good. We feel it is very important to support the local economy so we try and eat out 6 or 7 times during our 2 week stay.

We really like Nana Finas in Saranac Lake. We've always had great food and great service. I'm one of the ones that doesn't like Tail o the Pup. There's a small diner in Tupper across from the train station that we like a lot. I can't remember the name, but it has sort of a grape arbor out front.

We really enjoy Saranac Sourdough in Lake Placid. Fantastic fresh baked breads. Good food, cute atmosphere and they will make picnic baskets to go.

I did forget the Noon Mark diner. Of course it is a good ride away but if you are in Keene valley it is the place for pie. I prefer their wild Blueberry which is always special. They also make their own ice cream

day sitting outside among the mountains and eating lunch cannot be beat. We always stop there after hiking or swimming at Hulls falls.

I agree on Tail O the Pup. Some times I hate the place sometimes it is great. I am always in search of a real "local" place to eat which is not a tourist trap like the Pup. I miss the old Wawbeek which was fantastic before the main lodge burned down 76 olympics. We also miss Bull point which had the best hamburgers. The fancy Buffet that the Hotel Saranac use to have when

Boy, we have a few places to try this summer. I guess once at Fish Creek we tend to 'stick around' and eat 'campsite fare' (and a baby cone). Have been meaning to dine at the Lodge at Lake Clear for some time.

Has anyone gone up to Paul Smiths to try out their fine dishes on their culinary nights? I gather you can go up and enjoy some fine fare as students try out different dishes.

Love the Lumber Jack in Tupper. This is our usual stop on our way home after pulling out of FCP. They do breakfast all day but have other good things on the menu also. The place across the street is called Main Street Restaurant I think and we have had good meals there. Tail-O-Pup is good depending what

! Have tried Nana Finas twice and had good food. We agree that the diner at the airport has a good breakfast and friendly wait staff and we usually visit at least once during our stay.
